Assist with basic needs for pensioners
In 1999, Betty Crellin and Pem Morgan, having identified the need of assisting destitute families, decided to begin a Care Centre in Benoni, Ekurhuleni. Thus was The Haven Care Centre born.
During the ensuing 17 years, hundreds of families as well as single men, women and children, have benefited from the facilities and care provided by the organization.
At present, on an agricultural holding in Benoni North, 60 residents are housed, clothed, fed and their basic needs attended to. Adult residents are given meaningful employment and are paid a stipend whilst efforts are made to re-integrate them into the mainstream of society. Children are registered with local schools and are transported to and from school daily. School uniforms, lunches and materials are provided for the children and assistance given with homework and extramural activities.
The Haven Care Centre is fortunate that over the years, corporate and private donors have assisted in making it possible to survive and meet the needs of the residents. However, with ever increasing inflation and more and more indigent people knocking on the door, The Haven Care Centre requires a constant inflow of funds to add to the existing residential facilities, as well as cover the costs of utilities, transportation, food and other necessary items.
The Haven Care Centre is a registered NPO, is registered with SARS for Section 18(a) tax relief and has a level 4 B-BBEE status. The value of donations to the organization in terms of Social Skills or Enterprise Development qualify for tax rebates and the BEE rating adds to the scorecard of donors.
The Haven Care Centre believes in treating all the residents with dignity and consideration. Residents are not expected to collect donations by standing at street corners and trawling through shopping malls. It is for this reason that fund raising projects are generated for the benefit of all.
